Wildflower Preservationists
Wildflower Preservationists are an integral part of a team of volunteers tasked with the care and proliferation of one of the most beautiful elements of our native landscape, our entry drive wildflower beds. These volunteers nurture, preserve, and invigorate these wildflower areas. Duties include learning proper maintenance techniques for many varieties of wildflowers, seeding, deadheading and thinning wildflower areas, cultivation of wildflower beds, weeding and removal of invasive species, and answering questions and interacting with guests regarding the Museum’s wildflower cultivation.
Availability: Wildflower Preservationists may choose from one of four two-hour shifts offered per week. (Check Volunteer calendar for dates.)
Training: Three (1.5 hour) training classes each year: one each for spring, summer, and fall to learn plant identification, maintenance practices, new developments, and seasonal goals. These classes, conducted by Staff Horticulturalist and Grounds Manager, will be hands-on training as well as presentation based.
Commitment: Wildflower maintenance of the entry drive could take as much 480 man-hours throughout the course of a year. Following completion of the training program, preservationists are allowed to set up shifts to accommodate their varying schedules. It is our preference that preservationists commit to at least one 3 hour shift per month.
