VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Currently, we are accepting applications for the opportunities listed below, as well as for individuals who wish to be notified of other opportunities as they arise. Please consider completing a volunteer application using the online form below. All volunteers begin their training with an orientation session, followed by training specific to the area in which they wish to volunteer.

Administrative Support Volunteer

As an administrative support volunteer you will assist Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art staff with daily operational functions and office support. Examples of past opportunities include, but are not limited to: data entry, filing, scanning, copying, assembling binders, prepping art materials, stuffing envelopes, and other similar tasks. This opportunity is sporadic in nature, and volunteers who express an interest are contacted on an as-needed basis.

Avant-Gardeners

As an Avant-Gardener you will be part of an active group of nature loving volunteers inspired to build a hands-on relationship with Crystal Bridges’ native gardens. You will partner with our staff in the care and beautification of the more-than 12 acres of indigenous gardens throughout the Crystal Bridges grounds. Duties include familiarization with native plants and benefits of native gardening, identifying and removing weeds and invasive species, pruning and deadheading perennials and shrubs, directing and sharing plant information with guests.

Availability: Avante Gardeners may choose from one of four two-hour shifts offered per week. (Check Volunteer calendar for dates.)

Training: One 3-hour training seminar prior to signing up for shifts. One additional class per season is required each spring, summer, and fall. These classes, conducted by staff horticulturist and Grounds Manager, will be hands-on training as well as presentation based.

Commitment: Minimum of two shifts per month, timing is flexible.

Culinary

Volunteers will assist culinary staff during special events. Assistance can be in the display of food/drink, passing of food/ drink, and keeping service areas and tables clean during the events. Examples of past opportunities include Wednesday over Water, Young Patron events, lectures, and more.

Exit Survey

Volunteers will approach guests (only those who are willing) as they exit the Museum to ask them a few questions about their visit to Crystal Bridges. There is a lot of flexibility within the established shifts to come and go as needed, as the goal is to obtain surveys throughout the day.

Experience Art Studio

Volunteers maintain a welcoming presence for Museum guests in our Experience Art Studio. Volunteers will engage guests and urge participation in a variety of meaningful and enjoyable hands-on art experiences.

Group Tour Guide

Volunteers will offer informational tours to guests who have pre-arranged their visit to the Museum, and serve as point person for their visit.

Library Guide

Volunteers will be a welcoming presence for guests using the Museum Library. As a Library Guide you will answer general Museum and Museum Library reference questions, and help users locate books and other exhibitrelated materials in the Library.

Museum Guide

Volunteers will be a welcoming presence for Museum guests. Much like a concierge, you will offer general information, help guests understand options for tours, events, and other details for a wonderful Museum experience.

Museum Store Sales Associate

Volunteers will engage Museum store customers by assisting guests with merchandise selection, restocking merchandise, and maintaining displays.

Museum Store Stockroom Assistant

Volunteers will work behind the scenes to help process new merchandise, make note of damages and/or shortages on invoices, sign off on purchase orders, shelve merchandise within the stockroom, salvage packing material for reuse, and assisting in the maintenance of a clean workspace.

Public Events Assistant

Volunteers will assist with various educational programs offered at the Museum. Typical duties would include helping to set up for events, way finding, greeting, assisting with refreshments, and assisting guests in art-making projects.

Reflection Area Assistant

Volunteers will help maintain the gallery reflection areas through a once-per-day walkthrough to straighten the area and note any damage.

School Visit Assistant

The School Visits Assistant will assist the School Visits Coordinator in all logistical aspects of a school visit, including arrival, lunch, and departure, in a timely and efficient manner.

Skyspace Facilitator

As a Skyspace Facilitator you will welcome guests to James Turrell's The Way of Color. This outdoor sculpture, called a Skyspace, is located on the Crystal Bridges Art Trail. The facilitator introduces the work of art and guides a discussion about the artist and the Skyspace's impact on our perception of light, color, sound, and the changing sky.

Availability: Friday evenings (exact time varies with sunset changes)

Training: Approximately four hours

Commitment: 20-40 hours per year

Special Events

Volunteers will assist Special Events staff during group events at the Museum. Duties might include greeting, wayfinding and assistance with coat check. As events could include the serving of alcohol, volunteers must be 21 years of age or older.

Wildflower Preservationists

Wildflower Preservationists are an integral part of a team of volunteers tasked with the care and proliferation of one of the most beautiful elements of our native landscape, our entry drive wildflower beds. These volunteers nurture, preserve, and invigorate these wildflower areas. Duties include learning proper maintenance techniques for many varieties of wildflowers, seeding, deadheading and thinning wildflower areas, cultivation of wildflower beds, weeding and removal of invasive species, and answering questions and interacting with guests regarding the Museum’s wildflower cultivation.

Availability: Wildflower Preservationists may choose from one of four two-hour shifts offered per week. (Check Volunteer calendar for dates.)

Training: Three (1.5 hour) training classes each year: one each for spring, summer, and fall to learn plant identification, maintenance practices, new developments, and seasonal goals. These classes, conducted by Staff Horticulturalist and Grounds Manager, will be hands-on training as well as presentation based.

Commitment: Wildflower maintenance of the entry drive could take as much 480 man-hours throughout the course of a year. Following completion of the training program, preservationists are allowed to set up shifts to accommodate their varying schedules. It is our preference that preservationists commit to at least one 3 hour shift per month.
