Position Summary
In concert with the Museum’s Strategic Plan, a significant new initiative focuses on a major exhibition program with national and international presence. Working with the Museum President on the development of this multi-year program, the Assistant Curator will work to coordinate all activities related to the planning, creation, selection, scholarship, interpretation, and publication of the exhibition content and its travels. The Assistant Curator will conduct advance research and correspondence with colleagues, artists, dealers, and academics; coordinate and participate in research travel and studio visits nationally; work closely with registrars to coordinate transport and movement of works of art; develop the plan for writing, editing, and publication of a major catalogue and auxiliary interpretive materials; coordinate communication and negotiations with international venues for the traveling component of the exhibition program; and other duties as assigned,
The Assistant Curator, Special Projects will serve as a part of a focused team of professionals involved in the creation and execution of this major new initiative.
Principal Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

Assist with the organization and implementation of major new exhibition program as directed by the President

Assist with research and selection of works of art for exhibition as directed by the President

In coordination with the Education Department develop interpretive content and materials

In coordination with the Communication Department plan, organize, and develop content for at least one major catalogue

Assist with marketing, communications and negotiation with identified venues
-
Conduct advance correspondence with colleagues, artists, dealers, and academics to assist with research

Work with registrars to coordinate transport and movement of works of art

Coordinate and participate in research travel and studio visits nationally

Perform additional duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications

An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience will satisfy the minimum requirements.

Proficiency with standard office equipment including basic computer literacy (word processing, spread sheets, e-mail, etc.) telephone, fax and copy machines

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Ability to interpret the American Art collection and to communicate knowledge relevant to the collection in a manner which is understandable to the general public

Strong research skills, ability to perform scholarly research in the field

Ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks simultaneously

Demonstrated supervisory skills

Ability to interact collegially with all employees and volunteers at all levels of responsibility

Ability to maintain the highest ethics as they relate to all aspects of curatorial endeavor, and to understand and maintain the highest levels of confidentiality

Physical demands: In the work environment described below, position requires working at desk and utilizing a computer for prolonged periods of time and good eye/hand coordination. Position also requires verbal and written conversation with others, as well as standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching, strenuous lifting/moving objects up to 25 pounds. Vision abilities required by the job include close vision.

Work Environment: Work will be performed in an office environment, museum spaces, construction site, and off-site during travel. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to travel independently. Some overnight travel and occasional evening and weekend work are required. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
